The Capricornus Consort Basel is dedicated to exploring and reviving unknown works of baroque, often from a soloist perspective (one instrument per part), taking as its starting point the compositions of Samuel Capricornus (1628-1665) and his contemporaries. The ensemble was founded in 2006 by its artistic director and violinist Peter Barczi, bringing together a group of friends and colleagues with whom he studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Throughout all these years, the connecting principle of the ensemble has been the understanding of the complexity of demands placed on musicians dealing with early music. Unlike orchestral music and works of later periods, the ensemble’s repertoire is firmly rooted in the tradition of ex-tempore. The most crucial elements of interpreting this music are not notated, requiring each musician’s individual skill in their unified musical performance. The Capricornus Consort Basel has performed at a number of prestigious festivals. They have also released over 10 recordings under the Christophorus label. Internationally acclaimed, the Capricornus Consort Basel has received several awards such as Diapason d’Or, International Classical Music Award, Echo Klassik, OPUS Klassik, and the German Record Critics’ Award (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik).
