Tarsoly Zenekar - Folk Music Journeys

Our latest concert program is built upon the most successful selections from our 15 years of musical activity.
During the performance, the rich and diverse musical world of the Carpathian Basin comes to life through the interwoven melodies of the peoples living there. From the austere, Baroque-like sound of rural village ensembles to the dynamic, large-scale, urbanizing folk music, a wide variety of instrumental formations are featured.

We present the traditional sound of the three-member band typical of Transylvania, as well as the full-bodied, seven-member Gypsy-style village bands commonly heard at weddings in Hungary. The audience will hear the homemade flute, the traditional three-stringed viola from Transylvania, and marvel at the magical sound of the 156-string cimbalom — a Hungarian specialty recognized as a hungarikum.

In addition to authentic Hungarian folk music, we also perform the traditional music of neighboring peoples. This offers listeners insight into the musical similarities among these communities living side by side, while also making the differences in folk music traditions clearly noticeable.

Throughout the concert, with the help of our professional dancer friends, the traditions of folk dance are also brought to life. The audience can experience firsthand the true function and essence of traditional folk music — which is, in its purest form, dance.
