RedHerring was founded in 2011 by Patrick Denecker as a natural continuation of the artistic path he had begun with his Renaissance ensemble, La Caccia. Dedicated to the Baroque repertoire, the ensemble seeks to bring both well-known and rarely performed—or entirely forgotten—works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to the concert stage. Its profound knowledge of sixteenth-century music provides valuable insight into Baroque repertoire and forms a natural historical and stylistic continuation. As with all its projects, RedHerring's programmes are firmly rooted in the study of historical performance practice. Patrick Denecker believes that truly compelling performances arise from a deep understanding of the spirit of the age in which a composer lived. Recreating this music therefore requires a solid scholarly foundation, while audiences should experience it as though hearing it for the first time—performed with freshness, imagination and creativity. Depending on the repertoire, RedHerring performs as a vocal-instrumental chamber ensemble or as a Baroque orchestra. The ensemble has appeared at major international festivals, including MA Festival Bruges, the Utrecht Early Music Festival and the Festival of Flanders. RedHerring has recently completed the world premiere recording of a Mass and several motets by the eighteenth-century Antwerp chapel master Alphonso D'Eve. The album is scheduled for release in autumn 2026.
Lore Binon began her musical career as a violinist, graduating from the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel under Yuzuko Horigome. She later devoted herself to singing and graduated with highest distinction from the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where she studied with Valérie Guillorit. During her studies, she was awarded the Cardon Prize for outstanding artistic achievement. She made her operatic debut in Mozart's roles of Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro) with the Freiburger Barockorchester under René Jacobs and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. She has since appeared at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Opéra Royal de Versailles and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, earning particular acclaim for her performances in Lully's Atys, the operas of Monteverdi and Mozart, and the world premiere of Wim Henderickx's De Bekeerlinge. Renowned for her versatility and refined artistry, Lore Binon is equally at home in historically informed performance and contemporary music. She regularly collaborates with ensembles including Ictus, Spectra Ensemble, Il Gardellino, the Freiburger Barockorchester, B'Rock, Cappella Mediterranea, Anima Eterna and A Nocte Temporis. As a soloist, she has performed with leading orchestras such as the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Belgian National Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic and Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, working with conductors including Philippe Herreweghe, René Jacobs, Richard Egarr, Hugh Wolff and Jonathan Cohen. She has appeared at prestigious venues including the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Lore Binon is co-founder of the ensemble Revue Blanche, recipient of the 2013 KLARA Award for Young Talent, and was herself awarded the KLARA Award for Young Talent in 2019.
Patrick Denecker is a Belgian recorder player specialising in the performance and study of early music. Although his work is rooted in historically informed performance practice, he believes that this approach should not be confined to Renaissance, Baroque or Classical repertoire alone. Every musical style, regardless of period, possesses its own spirit, historical context and performance traditions worthy of exploration. Whenever possible, he performs on instruments closely associated with the period and repertoire, seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the musical world in which each composition was created. At the same time, he considers music to be an art of the present moment: a living form of expression in which creativity, imagination and spontaneity remain essential. Terms such as "ancient" or "historical" are therefore relative, since music truly exists only when it is performed and heard. This balance between historical research and artistic freedom shapes his interpretations and continually opens up new and unexpected perspectives on early music. He is the leader of the ensembles La Caccia and RedHerring. Within these flexible ensembles, he performs on a wide variety of recorders and historical reed instruments. With these ensembles, he has recorded several CDs for the Ricercar, Initié and Antarctica labels. He has performed throughout Europe, as well as in the United States, Latin America and Japan.
Guy Penson studied piano and harpsichord before establishing himself internationally as one of Belgium's leading harpsichordists and specialists in basso continuo. He received awards at several international competitions, notably at the prestigious International Harpsichord Competition in Bruges.
As a highly sought-after performer, he has appeared with renowned ensembles and orchestras at leading festivals throughout Europe—including France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Romania, Russia, the United Kingdom and Germany—as well as in Canada, the United States and Japan. Alongside his solo recitals, he is also an active chamber musician. His extensive discography comprises more than one hundred recordings for labels including Ricercar, Polydor, Vox Temporis, RGIP, Hyperion, Passacaille and Musique en Wallonie, in collaboration with ensembles such as Il Fondamento, Ex Tempore, Ricercar Consort, La Pastorella and RedHerring. His solo recordings, particularly those released on the Ricercar label, have been widely acclaimed by both the Belgian and international music press.
Marian Minnen has performed throughout Europe and beyond as a cellist with La Petite Bande (2004–2014) and, since 2004, with Les Muffatti. With the latter ensemble, she has twice appeared as a soloist in specially conceived concert programmes. Since 2015, she has also collaborated regularly with B'Rock Orchestra and A Nocte Temporis. In 2002, Marian Minnen became a laureate of the prestigious Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges. Together with Rossi Piceno, she received prizes at several international competitions, including Musica Antiqua Brugge (2003) and the Premio Bonporti in Rovereto, Italy (2004). Their recording Trios per a Oboès by Joan Baptista Pla and Josep Pla was released on the Ramée label in 2006. She is also a founding member of the ensemble Theano, which explores the rich possibilities of the Baroque cello, basse de violon and piccolo cello through a wide variety of artistic projects and performances.
