Gli Schiavoni ensemble brings together a younger generation of Croatian musicians dedicated to historically informed performance of early music. Having pursued individual studies in early music performance in Croatia and abroad, they were brought together by a shared desire to explore Croatia’s exceptionally rich musical heritage, which, particularly in the seventeenth century, was closely intertwined with broader European musical influences. The ensemble takes its name from the famous Riva degli Schiavoni in Venice, named after the Slavic merchants who, during the Venetian Republic, docked there with their ships, bringing goods from the eastern Adriatic coast, which was known in the old Venetian dialect as “Schiavonia”. Alongside gems of the Baroque repertoire written for voice and basso continuo, Gli Schiavoni seek to introduce audiences to the Croatian and European musical heritage of the seventeenth century, with particular emphasis on works that have either never been performed in modern times or are rarely heard. Their mission to present this still insufficiently explored repertoire in a fresh and compelling way, while investigating the connections between Croatian and European musical heritage, has been recognised by EEEMERGING, a European organisation supporting emerging early music performers. With its support, the ensemble will appear at several European festivals in 2026 and 2027.
