About performer: Founded in 1981, Camerata Vocale Daejeon, showing its outstanding musicality and creative performances, has been one of the best choirs in Korea.
The choir marked special moments in its past careers, through which made a good leap forward to the world-level choir. One of the moments was when invited to perform at Bach International Choral Festival(2005), introducing its music into international audiences. Another one was a registration in the British & International Music Yearbook 2007.
In 2007, the choir invited Maestro Winfried Toll, who is one of the most respected choral conductors, and opened an exciting musical journey leading the Korean choral history into a higher level. It performed J. S. Bach’s Mass in b minor, BWV 232 in 2008 and The St. John Passion, BWV 245 with authentic instruments in 2009, which provided a breath of fresh air to Korean choral music.
The choir’s passionate challenges in music continued in 2010 as well, recording G. F. Handel’s Dixit Dominus, HWV 232. And, it had a tour not only in Seoul but also in Asian countries such as Shanghai and Bangkok, solidifying its position as one of the best choirs representing Korea. Until now, it has performed a wide range of repertoire from Baroque music through contemporary works: F. J. Haydn’s Nelson Mass, F. Martin’s Mass For Double Choir, and J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, J. Brahms’s Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer, Op.65 etc. Also, it performed G. F. Handel’s Messiah HWV 56 in baroque style in Seoul Special Concert, which was considered to have broaden a new horizon of choral music. In 2013, it attracted a lot of classical music enthusiasts by performing G. Faure’s Requiem. Recording of F. Martin’s Mass For Double Choir by Sony Lable, also drew attention of audience.
Especially in 2013, the choir was invited to perform Isang Yoon’s O Licht at Tongyeong international music festival. And in the year of 2014 the choir was also invited to perform at Menuhin Festival in Switzerland and participated in tour concert Germany, drawing out standing ovation from European audience by performing Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle and other repertoires consisting music from baroque to contemporary. At the same year, the choir won the grand prize at the 1st Grand Art Award of orchestral music department chosen by Seoul Art Center.
Winfried Toll studied theology and philosophy before he turned to composition and music education. Following him music examinations he studied voice with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Aldo Baldin. He taught music and voice at the Freiburg Conservatory of Music and began an active career as a concert and opera singer.
At the same time Winfried Toll also worked as a conductor of various ensembles. In 1988 he took over the Camerata Vocale Freiburg. He also received numerous invitations by outstanding orchestras and ensembles as a guest conductor. Among these are the Concerto Köln, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Freiburger Barockorchester, the SWR-Vokalensemble, Stuttgart and the RIAS
Kammerchor Berlin.
Since 1994, he has been invited as a guest professor on a regular basis to the Musashino University in Tokyo. From 1994 until 2002 he was the choir director of the Kölner Bach-Verein. In the fall of 1997 Winfried Toll was appointed Professor of choral conducting at the Conservatory for Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt / Main. He is the successor to Helmut Rilling and Wolfgang Schafer as
conductor of the Frankfurter Kantorei.
In summer 2007, Winfried Toll had an invitation as a guest professor for a masterclass at the University of Rio de Janeiro(Brazil) and as a guest conductor for festivals in Turin, Berlin, Gebellina / Sicity, Biennale Venice, Salzburg, Aix en Provence, Montpelier(France), Erivan(Armenia), Rheingaufestival, Louisville(Kentucky, USA), and vancouver festival (Canada). Now he is directing Camerata Vocale Daejeon as an Artistic Director & Principal Conductor.
Varaždin Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1994, continuing chamber orchestra tradition in Varaždin, especially strong in 50’s and 60’s years of past century. Their central activity is a cycle of five premiere concerts in a season performed in the concert hall of the CNT in Varaždin. The orchestra regularly performs at Varaždin Baroque Evenings and holds concerts all over Croatia – in Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Opatija, Osijek, Karlovac, Čakovec, as well as abroad – in Slovenia, Germany, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The orchestra recorded three CDs.
Though appearing very often without the conductor, the orchestra occasionally cooperates with renowned conductors like Pavle Dešpalj, Milan Horvat, Kazushi Ono, Marko Letonja, Vjekoslav Šutej, Uroš Lajovic, Vladimir Kranjčević, Mladen Tarbuk, Ivo Lipanović, Zoran Juranić, Ivan Repušić and others. Some eminent instrumentalists and singers appeared on stage with the orchestra: Ruža Pospiš-Baldani, Dubravka Tomšič-Srebotnjak, Dunja Vejzović, Višnja Mažuran, Monika Leskovar, Karmen Pečar, Renata Pokupić, Radovan Vlatković, David Geringas, Valter Dešpalj, Dora Schwarzberg, Branimir Slokar, Peter Soave, Stanko Arnold, Ištvan Römer, Lovro Pogorelić,Božo Paradžik, Inva Mula...
Along with two permanent concertmasters (Dunja Bontek and Ivana Penić Defar), the orchestra is often engaging guests-concertmasters like Leon Spierer, Catherine Mackintosh, Taras Pečeny, Tamara Smirnova, Aleksandar Ivić, Boro Martinić, Mario Korunić, Latica Honda-Rosenberg, Stefan Milenkovich.
The orchestra has been given the award of Varaždin Baroque Evenings Ivan Lukačić, the award of Croatian Society of Music Artists Milka Trnina, as well as the Plaque of the City of Varaždin. For their concert held on Dubrovnik Summer Festival in 2007, they won Orlando award and for the concert held on Varaždin Baroque Evenings Jurica Murai award for the best interpretation of soloist, conductor or chamber ensemble.
